The Present Levels of Academic Achievement and Functional Performance (PLAAFP) section is the cornerstone of the IEP, and all other parts of the IEP flow from it. The words written (and not written) in the PLAAFP can be the difference between your district winning or losing a due process hearing, resolving a dispute with a parent, and actually providing FAPE for the student.

Make sure you get this essential piece of the IEP right with guidance from attorney Dianna Bowen. With the IDEA’s flexibility regarding how districts document a student’s present levels, she’ll give you much-needed guidance on your legal requirements and best practices — to guide you in drafting PLAAFPs that lead to a legally compliant IEP and, more importantly, that provide and document FAPE.

Drawing on her experiences as a school law attorney and as a parent of a child with special needs, Dianna will use case law and practical scenarios to teach you how to:

  • Analyze key components of a PLAAFP and data points to include
  • Evaluate appropriate means of creating a PLAAFP
  • Identify ways that a PLAAFP leads to a legally compliant IEP
  • Identify ways that a PLAAFP documents progress and provides FAPE to the student
  • Avoid common missteps that result in an inaccurate and weak PLAAFP
  • And more

Why might a child who doesn’t qualify for an IEP still be eligible for a Section 504 plan? Do the same staff members serve on IEP and 504 teams? Attorney Kendra Yoch will clear up educators' confusion regarding the two types of plans, dissecting the key differences in plan components, legal requirements and standards of FAPE — to guide you in ensuring your practices and decisions comply with the IDEA and Section 504.

In addition to relevant provisions under both laws, you’ll learn lessons from case law and federal guidance addressing IEP and 504 plan requirements, including what information must be included in each.

Develop appropriate, compliant IEPs and 504 plans by having staff attend this training that will deliver guidance to:

  • Distinguish requirements for IEP eligibility and the document from 504 plan requirements
  • Identify differences between services in the IEP and accommodations/supports in the 504 plan
  • Ensure IEP services and 504 plan accommodations satisfy the applicable standard of FAPE
  • Convene IEP and 504 teams comprised of appropriate and required members
  • Develop timelines that follow rules for reviewing and revising IEPs and 504 plans
  • And more
